As we step into February 2025, the anticipation for upcoming role-playing games is palpable. This year promises to be a treasure trove for fans of the genre. We are expecting several highly-anticipated RPG titles to release across various platforms. So, whether you love the good ol’ D&D type of roleplay or you are more of a fan of JRPGs, you have something to look forward to.
Monster Hunter Wilds is at the forefront of RPG titles people wait for
Scheduled for release on February 28, Monster Hunter Wilds is one of the most awaited titles this month. Developed by Capcom, this game builds upon the success of previous Monster Hunter titles by incorporating more RPG elements and expansive environments.
However, it may not fit neatly into traditional RPG categories due to its action-oriented gameplay. Wilds will undoubtedly appeal to fans seeking a mix of exploration and combat. Although not as complex as Satisfactory, for instance, Monster Hunter is sure to have some intricate mechanics.
Capcom confirms that Wilds will launch on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S. Given its similarity in scale and design to Monster Hunter World, players can expect larger maps. Especially if we compare them to some previous entries like Rise, which was optimized for the Nintendo Switch.
Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster
On March 6, Konami will release an HD remaster compilation package featuring two timeless classics: Suikoden and its sequel. Although not entirely new content, these remasters offer improved visuals with enhanced backgrounds and animations along with quality-of-life updates such as auto-save features.
For fans who have been waiting nearly two decades since the last mainline entry in the series (excluding spin-offs), this remaster provides a nostalgic revisit while keeping hopes alive for future installments.
The improvements are modest but welcome additions that preserve the essence of these JRPG masterpieces without altering their core gameplay or storylines.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows
Set for release on March 20 after being delayed from November 2024, Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows promises an immersive experience set in Feudal Japan. This installment continues Ubisoft’s trend of integrating more RPG elements into their games since Origins.
Players can switch between two protagonists—Naoe (a shinobi) and Yasuke (a samurai)—each offering unique skills and playstyles that cater to different combat preferences4.
The dual-protagonist structure adds depth to the gameplay while maintaining stealth-based combat reminiscent of earlier Assassin’s Creed titles.
The Outer Worlds 2 adds excitement to the awaited RPG titles
Obsidian Entertainment can make significant waves with not one but potentially two major releases this year: Avowed and The Outer Worlds sequel. While there are concerns about delays given Obsidian’s ambitious plans, if successful, The Outer Worlds 2 could expand significantly upon its predecessor’s satirical sci-fi universe with new planets and enhanced stealth mechanics.
This follow-up aims to be “twice as long” as the original game—a testament to Obsidian’s commitment to crafting engaging narratives within their unique settings.
Solasta: Crown of Sorrow – Solasta II Early Access
Tactical Adventures’ Solasta II is another notable title that you should expect in early access form during 2025. Building upon its predecessor’s authenticity rooted in D&D rulesets but criticized for barebones storytelling initially, Solasta II promises improvements by adopting a more sandbox-like approach, allowing players greater freedom across Neokos lands.
It may seem that Larian Games’ recent success with Baldur’s Gate III might have overshadowed Solasta. Now, it seems like an opportune moment for Tactical Adventures’ sequel without direct competition from similar high-profile releases based on tabletop rulesets.
This list is much bigger in reality. The RPG genre has been on the rise in recent years. Lately, the popularity of Black Myth: Wukong, Elden Ring, and Kingdom Come Deliverance, RPG, is in the spotlight. A lot of fans seem to finally understand the importance of good storytelling and very immersive world-building and how much it means for these games. 2025 is going to give us RPG titles that will surely captivate us for hours on end; and to be honest – I’m here for it!
